Word For Today – Ashes

Scripture
“By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”  Genesis 3:19 ESV

Devotion – Marked by Ashes, Moved by Hope
Today I reflect on the meaning of “Ashes.” In the book of Genesis, we are reminded that humanity was formed from the dust of the ground, a powerful image of humility as “Ashes” or dust before our Creator. These “Ashes” call me to remember that while this earthly body is limited and mortal, my spirit remains eternal, always alive in the presence of God.  On Ash Wednesday, we wear “Ashes” as a sign of repentance, remembrance, and surrender. It is an intentional turning away from earthly pride and a renewed focus on the eternal truths of God’s Kingdom, Kin-dom, and Kin-ship. The “Ashes” mark a sacred beginning, a time to draw closer to God through prayer, fasting, and reflection. Whether we are “giving up” or “giving something” for Lent, we do so with the desire to make room for the Holy Spirit to guide us toward inner renewal.  Ashes remind us that we are human. Hope reminds us that we are redeemed.

Reflection
The forty days of Lent invite us to confront the consequences of sin while clinging to our hope in Jesus Christ. Through Christ, we embrace both repentance and redemption. We acknowledge our frailty, yet we stand firmly in the promise of resurrection and life beyond sin, life restored and reconciled to God.  Where do I need to surrender pride and return to humility before God?  What will I release—or take on—during Lent to deepen my walk with Christ?  How can I intentionally focus on eternal truths rather than temporary distractions?

Call to Action
✝️Begin this Lenten
season with intentional prayer each day.
✝️Choose a meaningful fast or spiritual practice that draws you closer to God.
✝️Reflect on areas that require repentance and invite the Holy Spirit into them.
✝️Share the hope of redemption in Christ with someone this week.

Pray
Gracious and Eternal God, As I receive the sign of “Ashes,” remind me of my humanity and my deep need for You. Teach me humility and lead me into true repentance. Create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me. As I walk through these forty days of Lent, help me release pride, surrender sin, and cling to the hope found in Jesus Christ. Thank You for the promise of redemption and resurrection life. May Your Holy Spirit guide me daily toward renewal and deeper kin-ship with You.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
