Word For Today – Compassion
Scripture:
“As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience.” Colossians 3:12 NRSV
Devotion – Clothed in Compassion
Today I reflect on “Compassion.” As a follower of Christ, I seek to reflect Christ’s nature by walking in “Compassion,” grounded in my identity in Jesus Christ. As one of God’s chosen ones, I have been given a new identity in Christ, set apart to live as an example of what it means to follow Christ each day. Living with “Compassion” is a daily, intentional choice, much like getting dressed each morning. We must consciously choose to “put on” Christlike qualities rather than waiting for them to appear on their own. To act with “Compassion” means setting aside old, selfish ways and embracing a new, Spirit-driven character that mirrors the heart of Jesus Christ. As God’s holy and beloved people, we are called to be clothed daily in “Compassion,” allowing our words, attitudes, and actions to reflect the love of Christ in every interaction.
Reflection
We demonstrate “Compassion” by bearing with one another, offering forgiveness as Christ forgave us, and binding everything together in love. Compassion is not weakness; it is strength under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is choosing grace when irritation rises, patience when frustration tempts us, and humility when pride tries to take center stage. What does it look like for me to consciously “put on” compassion today? Is there someone I need to forgive or bear with more patiently? How can my response to others reflect my identity as God’s chosen and beloved?
Call to Action
💗Intentionally choose one Christlike quality to “put on” today.
💗Offer forgiveness where there has been offense.
💗Practice patience in a situation that would normally frustrate you.
💗Speak one word of kindness to someone who least expects it.
💗Bind your interactions together in love through prayer before responding.
Pray
Gracious God, thank You for calling me chosen, holy, and beloved. Help me to clothe myself daily in “Compassion,” kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Teach me to set aside selfish ways and embrace the Spirit-led character of Christ. Let my words and actions reflect Your heart. Guide me to bear with others in love and to forgive as I have been forgiven. May my life be a visible expression of Your compassion in the world today.
