Advent HOPE: Christ Our Deliverer
Scripture
“There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit. And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.” Isaiah 11:1–2 ESV
Devotion
Today marks the beginning of Advent, a sacred season that opens with the powerful theme of HOPE. Advent HOPE is not vague optimism, but confident expectation in the promised Messiah, Jesus Christ, who has come and will come again. This first Sunday of Advent invites hearts to wait with both longing and assurance, remembering Jesus’ first coming as Deliverer—the One who sets us free from selfishness, sin, and everything that keeps us from reflecting the goodness of God in the world. In Jesus’ name, this HOPE does more than comfort; it transforms, restores, and releases believers to live with renewed purpose.
Reflection
Where in life is there a deep longing—for healing, justice, reconciliation, or clarity—that Advent HOPE is inviting you to bring before Jesus? How might remembering Christ as the promised “shoot from the stump of Jesse” reshape your expectations about what God can restore and bring to life again? Consider one area where Jesus feels more like a distant memory than a present King. What would it look like today to welcome Him as a living presence, allowing the Holy Spirit to counsel, strengthen, and direct your responses, especially in hard or complicated situations?
Call to Action
🕯️Speak a specific word of hope into one difficult situation today.
🕯️Read Isaiah 11:1–2, asking the Holy Spirit to awaken in you.
🕯️Identify where you feel “stuck” or discourage and intentionally surrender it to God.
🕯️Share an Advent encouragement, text, email, social post, or conversation.
Pray
Lord Jesus, thank You for this first Sunday of Advent and for the gift of HOPE that comes through Your life, death, and resurrection. You are the promised shoot from the stump of Jesse, the One on whom the Spirit of the Lord rests in wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, and holy fear. Rule in hearts today not as a distant memory, but as a living presence guiding every thought, word, and decision through the power of the Holy Spirit. Set Your people free from selfishness, sin, and anything that keeps them from becoming expressions of Your goodness in the world. Teach me to speak words of HOPE into difficult situations and to live with purpose that reflects Your saving love. In this Advent season, awaken a fresh expectancy for what You are doing and will yet do. In Your holy name, Jesus, Amen.
