The Word For Today – Sabbath

Scripture
“So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.”  Hebrews 4:9–10 ESV

Devotion – Resting in the Finished Work of Jesus
Today, I reflect on the word “Sabbath.” I thank God for the spiritual “Sabbath” rest we have in Jesus Christ and for the Holy Spirit’s daily guidance, comfort, and strength. “Sabbath” rest invites us to pause, release our striving, and become still in God’s presence. We cannot earn salvation through good works, religious performance, or anxious effort. Salvation is God’s gift, received by faith in Jesus Christ. As we intentionally rest, may we release the pressure to prove ourselves and trust more deeply in the finished work of Jesus.

Reflection
Sabbath reminds us that we can stop striving because God is still working. Rest is not simply the absence of activity; it is the intentional practice of trusting God. In stillness, we make room to listen, worship, pray, and allow the Holy Spirit to renew our hearts and minds.  What do I need to release today so that I can truly rest in God’s presence?

Call to Action
🙏🏽Pause and intentionally create space for “Sabbath” rest today.
🙏🏽Release the pressure to accomplish, perform, or prove yourself.
🙏🏽Rest in the assurance that salvation is God’s gift through Jesus Christ.
🙏🏽Listen for the guidance and comfort of the Holy Spirit.
🙏🏽Worship, pray, and reflect on God’s faithfulness.
🙏🏽Trust that even while you rest, God remains at work.

Pray
Gracious God, thank You for the gift of Sabbath and the spiritual rest I have through Jesus Christ. Teach me to become still in Your presence and release the pressure to strive, perform, and prove myself. Thank You that salvation is not something I can earn but Your gracious gift received through faith in Jesus. Holy Spirit, quiet my heart, renew my mind, and help me listen for Your guidance. When worry tells me that everything depends upon me, remind me that You are God and I can trust You. May this Sabbath be filled with worship, prayer, reflection, and renewed faith. Help me rest in the finished work of Jesus and rise refreshed to faithfully follow where You lead. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
