…And said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven. ” Acts 1:11 ESV
Devotion – Looking Beyond the Sky
Today I reflect on “Looking” in light of the Ascension of Jesus. After Jesus’ resurrection, the disciples were tempted to remain in a posture of waiting, “Looking” for Jesus to direct their next steps. Yet the message spoken to them reminds us that discipleship is not about remaining frozen in place or endlessly waiting for visible signs. Through Christ, God has already equipped me and you for the journey ahead. In this new day, I am called to move forward in faith, trusting what I have been taught and relying on the guidance of the Holy Spirit, in Jesus’ name. There is no need for us to stand merely “Looking” into the sky for God. God’s presence remains with us through the Holy Spirit, our Comforter, Guide, and daily source of power. The Ascension reminds us that while Jesus ascended in glory, Jesus’ mission did not end. The work of love, justice, compassion, and witness continues through us.
Reflection
As followers of Christ, we are invited to live God-centered lives, trusting that God is near and actively leading our steps each day.Where am I standing still and only “Looking” for direction instead of trusting the Holy Spirit and moving forward in faith? How is God calling me to live out Christ’s mission today?
Call to Action
🌤️Pause and pray for the Holy Spirit’s guidance today.
🌤️Release hesitation and trust what God has already placed within you.
🌤️Take one faithful step toward a God-given assignment or opportunity.
🌤️Encourage someone else to trust God’s presence and move forward in faith.
🌤️Remember that Christ’s mission continues through us.
Pray
Gracious and loving God, thank You for the gift of this new day and for the Ascension of Jesus, which reminds us that Your work continues through us. Forgive us when we remain standing and only “looking,” waiting for signs while neglecting the guidance You have already given through the Holy Spirit. Empower us to move forward with courage, faith, and holy purpose. Help us to trust what we have learned, follow Your leading, and live God-centered lives that reflect Christ in the world. May we walk confidently, knowing that You are with us as Comforter, Guide, and source of strength. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
